5 Common Causes of High Car Emissions

High car emissions lead to wasted fuel and excessive carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere, which can have a significant impact on the environment. There are several possible causes of high car emissions and knowing what to look for can help you identify small issues before they become larger problems. Here are some of the most common causes of high car emissions to watch for in order to keep your vehicle as eco-friendly as possible!

1. Fuel Injection Problem

A problem with your fuel injector or its engine control unit can create excessive emissions by creating a poor balance between the amount of fuel and the amount of air that is used.

2. Faulty Oxygen Sensor

A faulty oxygen sensor may not accurately register the amount of oxygen that is in your exhaust, which can negatively affect the quality and amount of your car's emissions.

3. Poor EVAP System

Leaks or breaks in your Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP System) can cause excessive gas fume leakage.

4. Vacuum Leak

A Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP Sensor) can malfunction if your vacuum gaskets or lines are leaking, which can lead to increased emissions.

5. Bad Mass Air Flow Sensor

Your Mass Air Flow Sensor determines the amount of fuel that should be used at any given time based on the amount of air in your internal combustion engine. A poorly-functioning sensor can allow too much fuel to be used, resulting in excessive carbon monoxide.

Importance of Reducing Car Emissions

High car emissions can have a negative impact on both your vehicle and the environment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, transportation-related fuel emissions are increasing at a higher rate than any other type of emission, which means that vehicles are having a significant impact on the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. For this reason, they must pass specific emissions tests to determine whether they are emitting an acceptable level of carbon dioxide. Lowering your overall fuel efficiency also decreases the amount of money you need to spend on gas and the amount of wear and tear on your vehicle.
