Regular Maintenance to Keep Your Car in Good Shape

Everybody wants to get the most out of their vehicles, but it is sometimes easier said than done. Life gets in the way and people start to put off things like oil changes and tire rotations. However, with proper care and maintenance the modern car can last hundreds of thousands of miles.

Inspecting Your Car

Perhaps the easiest (and cheapest) way to keep your car on the road is to perform regular checkups. At least once a week you should check the following aspects of your car.

  • Check the fluid levels (engine oil, coolant, wiper fluid, and transmission oil).
  • Check your tires for the correct air pressure and proper tread depth. Improper tire pressure can cause permanent damage to your car’s driveline components, as well as making it dangerous to drive.
  • It is also a good idea to take a walk around your vehicle while it's running to listen for any strange noises. If there is a strange noise, you should contact a mechanic as soon as possible.

Service Intervals

One of the most important things to keep an engine in healthy condition is to keep up with regular oil changes. Your owner's manual is the best place to find out how often to change your oil, and what type of oil best suites your environment.

Replacement Parts

At one point or another, your vehicle might need a replacement part. Whether it's an alternator or a new drive shaft, you should always use appropriate parts. A part that wasn't built correctly can cause a lot of harm to your vehicle. Your best option is to buy genuine parts through your car’s manufacturer. If that is not an option you should look for a name brand aftermarket part that has good reviews. If you are hiring a mechanic to do the work make sure you know what brand of part they are buying. With a little time and effort you can ensure your car will last a long time.
