4 Tips for Preparing Your Car for Winter Weather

Getting your car ready for winter is more than fixing tires and inspecting the battery. It is best to have your vehicle fully inspected and ensure it is well prepared for winter. Keep reading to discover several tips to help you keep your car functional during this winter season.

1. Maintain a Ratio of 70/30 of Antifreeze to Distilled Water

Adequate preparation entails checking the engine coolant, or antifreeze. Coolant is a liquid that helps to keep the car's engine at normal temperatures and in good condition. During extreme winter temperatures, mixing antifreeze with distilled water at a ratio of 70/30 can help to prevent your engine from freezing. Some antifreeze is already mixed with water, but you can add more when needed.

2. Use Winter Windshield Wiper Fluid

When replacing windshield fluids, it is imperative to use the right type made for winter. Ordinary wiper fluid used throughout the spring, summer, and fall can actually freeze upon contact with your windshield during the winter. Winter fluid is designed for freezing temperatures and will help to loosen ice and snow from your windshield.

3. Switch to Winter-Grade Oil

During the winter season, it is important to switch to a winter-grade oil to best protect your engine. The lower the temperatures, the thinner your engine oil should be. To ensure you are using the right winter-grade oil for your vehicle, talk to a professional mechanic at your next oil change.

4. Check Brake Fluid

During winter, you should ensure that your brakes are in good condition. In this case, check the brake fluid to determine if the fluids are within the recommended levels. During the winter season, water molecules and other debris can build up in your car’s brake fluid, lowering brake performance. To ensure your brakes work well this winter, have your brake fluid inspected and changed by an expert.
